The Lovely Bones Book review

The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold.
Ratings: :) :) :)

I found this when I explored The Times Bookshop in Singapore.
It captured my interest when the synopsis at the back reads ‘My name is Salmon, like the fish, first name, Susie. I was fourteen when I was murdered on December 6, 1973.’

And off I flipped the first few pages of the book. The part that made me hurried to the paying counter was when George Harvey, the main antagonist of this story said ‘Take your clothes off. I want to check that you’re still a virgin,’ I’m not a pervert but I must say this sentence gave some impact on me at that time. (Still does)

Maybe it’s because I was (am) still obsessed with the ‘Junko Furuta case’ that I went on exploring the internet about all other homicides/murders committed by people all around the world. Urghh. I’m weird, I know.

This is Susie Salmon, played by Saoirse Ronan (Seer-Sya Ronan).

Okay, I'm writing a book review, not a movie review. Never mind, to help you imagine better. *nodded head*

I shall not start writing long winded synopsis of this novel. You can just read it from anywhere. I’ll just write what I think about it.

 Salmon and Singh

There are more narrative descriptions than dialogues depicted in this novel.
I don't like this part. The part where Susie entered Ruth’s body and made love with her teenage crush, Ray Singh. I mean, she only had like, less than 24 hours in Ruth’s body and the ONLY thing she did was THAT??? I totally can’t understand you, Susie Salmon! At least meet your parents and siblings for a while. Tell them you’re okay. Tell them not to worry about you and go on with their lives as you are living ‘Happily ever after’ in heaven up there. And yeah, tell them where did Harvey bury your body parts, pfttt..
 George-PitymeIhavetroubledchildhood- Harvey
There are some elements of suspense as well. The part where Jack Salmon was hit in the cornfield and also the part where Lindsey sneaked into Harvey's house and ripped a page off Harvey's sketchbook. The page? What page? Read the book by yourself, will you!

And I’m a bit mad about what happened to Harvey in the end.  It seems like worldly justice is never served. He died all alone by himself. Fine, being hit by icicles. LOL. I would prefer it if the writer puts it like, ‘George Harvey was eaten by the crocodiles when he fell from the boat at the Amazon River. His body was never found,’ Good for him, then. He should suffer the same cause of death as what he did to his victims.

But then, it would be illogical as well. So, George Harvey suffered some kind of a troubled childhood and it had some aftereffects that resulted to him killing people like DUHHH….It seems like the writer’s trying to instill sympathy towards George Harvey in us, the readers. She’s trying to convey that the blame shouldn’t be entirely put on Harvey. He couldn’t help it. He had a troubled childhood. Sorry, FAILED!

Okay, too much information revealed. But then, it’s quite interesting. You can start reading it and you can put it away anytime you wanted. Then you can start reading again. And when you reached the boring part, you can put it down again. Then you can read it halfway, and watch Arashi shows. But really, it’s a good attempt as this is Alice Sebold’s debut novel. It’s not easy to write a novel, I can assure you that. Maybe the movie would be more interesting. My blurb would be…

‘ ‘putdownable’!’

Hey, at least I rated it 3 smileys! :D

My Fair Princess

My Fair Princess/Princess Returning Pearl/Huan Zhu Ge Ge is based on a series of books by a Chinese Writer named Qiong Yao.
The second season broke China TV's record with the highest rating ever,
achieving almost 50% viewership in all local TV stations. (wikipedia, n.d.) LOL.
Now, it is aired again on NTV7 weekdays, 2.30-3.30 p.m. A must see!

I watched this 11 years ago and I still love it after 11 years :P
Why? Because it awakens your wonderful childhood memories. Back then, one of the things I was worried about is whether I could watch My Fair Princess everyday (not missing a single episode). The thing that I really wanted most is the complete My Fair Princess boxset which caused RM 233.90 back then. Yes, I still remember the exact price. Of course my parents couldn't tolerate such infatuations whenever I begged them to buy me that boxset.

I remember becoming all gloomy and upset when I stepped out of the car to attend Music class. I kept on pleading and ushering them to buy me and of course they refused to do so.
When they picked me up, my mum had bought a complete series of 'What Katy Did' instead. That was the last time I ever mentioned about My Fair Princess again.

I fall in love with the characters and the colourful images that they portrayed. I love their dresses-the headgears especially, the DEELISH Wu Ar Ge (Fifth prince), the hyper Xiao Yan Zhi, the storylines and the music. Yeah!
I first watched My Fair Princess 2 Cantonese Version in  1999. Then I watched My Fair Princess 1 Mandarin Version in 2000. Then My Fair Princess 2 Mandarin Version in 2001. :D
In Cantonese version,
Xiao Yan Zhi is Siew Yin Chi.
Zhi Wei is Chi Mei,
Yong Qi is Weng Kei,
Er Kang is Yi Hong.
Jing Soh is Jin Suo (LOL)

And in 2005, My Fair Princess 3 was aired on 8TV. I switched on the TV, eager to watch the characters that I love dearly. Imagine my surprise and disappointment 1 minute later.
Most of the original casts had been replaced in My Fair Princess 3! Like, seriously. No one can play the part of Xiao Yan Zhi than Vicki Zhao herself! Erk. And no one can replace Alec Su as Wu Ar Ge. :P
Oklah, brief synopsis.

My Fair Princess 1.
Xia Zhi Wei and Jin Suo traveled all the way to Beijing from Canton because Zhi Wei wanted to search for her father upon her mother's request before death. Her father is the Emperor Qian Long of China himself. They met Xiao Yan Zhi. The two of the become sworn sisters and Xiao Yan Zhi helped Zhi Wei to deliver the painting and poem to the Emperor. The three of them climbed the hill because the Emperor and his comrades were hunting deers at that time. hahaha. Zhi Wei and Jin Suo couldn't keep up with the pace so Xiao yan Zhi went up by herself. Wu Ar Ge accidentally shoot Xiao Yan Zhi with the arrow. She was almost unconscious then the emperor saw the painting and the fan (poem) and he was shocked. He commanded Xiao Yan Zhi be brought to the palace and be treated.
So you get it, the mix up. Emperor thought that Xiao Yan Zhi is his long lost daughter. Then Zhi Wei came into the palace, romance sparked and you know what happened la.

My Fair Princess 2.
The continuation of My Fair Princess 1. More episodes, more romance, more laughter. A really hilarious happy ending. Hahaha. Okay, Wu Ar Ge and Xiao Yan Zhi got married while Zhi Wei and Er Kang got married as well. The mixed up is so hilarious like I was ROFL!

My Fair Princess 3. THE SADDEST season I've ever watched. Zhi Wei and Er Kang had a 5 year old son ( I guess). Due to her hyperactive nature, Xiao Yan Zhi had suffered various miscarriages. Then that stupid Lau Fo Ye (Dowager Empress) commanded that Wu Ar Ge is to be married with stupid Zhi Hua, a girl of her choice. Okay, it is so sad la. The settings are in the time of war with the Myanmar people. Finally, Yong Qi gave up his Wu Ar Ge title so that he and Xiao Yan Zhi can spend their lives together OUTSIDE the palace. They had kids and lived happily ever after. SO SADDD..

The new casts.

In My Fair Princess 3, Only the actors/actresses who played Er Kang, Qing Er and Lau Fo Ye remains. aadasfafz;sfkzfhlk

The original casts are really well known nowadays. Vicki Zhao who played Xiao Yan Zhi starred in Shaolin Soccer with Stephen Chow  and So Close with Shu Qi and Fann Wong? I forgot already and in many other movies.
Alec Su starred with Korean actress Chae-Rim in one particular movie I forgot the title. He also played the part of Emperor in 'The Mischievous Princess' with Jang Nara.

Till then, toodles!
